She likes cooking, reading, doing photography, and travelling. When she had just finished her schooling, she got a call from one of her family friends, (who worked at the Times of India office in Hyderabad) who told Dia about the Miss India contest. She sent her portfolio and was selected for the contest. She utilized the money that she had saved from the job that she did in her school days to go to Mumbai. Her first salary as a marketing executive was Rs. 5000. Her mother was against her participating in the Miss India contest because she wanted Dia to study in a law school in Bangalore. However, her step-father convinced her mother to let her participate in the contest. Before making her debut in the film industry, she appeared in the music video of Babul Supriyo and Alka Yagnik‘s song “Khoya Khoya Chand” in 2000. In 2000, she also made an appearance in the Tamil film “En Swasa Kaatre.” She has got ‘Aazaad’ (freedom) tattooed on the wrist of her left hand. There is a leopardess at the Lucknow Zoo who is named after Dia Mirza, the leopardess was rescued from Mirzapur, that is why the zoo officials named her- Dia Mirza. The zoo officials also requested the actress to name the two cubs of the leopardess Dia, the actress named the two cubs- Ashoka and Nakshatra. Mirza was born in Hyderabad, India. Her father, Frank Handrich, was a German graphics and industrial fair designer, architect, artist and interior designer based in Munich. Her mother, Deepa, is a Bengali interior designer and landscaper who also volunteers to help alcoholics and drug addicts. When she was four-and-a-half years old, her parents were divorced. After her mother married Ahmed Mirza, a Muslim man from Hyderabad, she adopted her step-father’s surname. He died in 2003. After initially attending Vidyaranya High School, a co-ed school, Mirza was enrolled into Nasr School, a girls day school in Khairtabad. She then attended Stanley Junior College before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad. In April 2014, she became engaged to her longtime business partner Sahil Sangha, and they were married on 18 October 2014 at his farmhouse in Chattarpur on the outskirts of Delhi. In August 2019, Mirza announced their separation. On 15 February 2021, Mirza married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in Bandra, Mumbai. Prior to modelling, she used to work for a media studio as a marketing executive. She started her film career with the film “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein” in 2001 She was decorated by the Green Crusader of the Year Award at IAA – India Chapter Olive Crown Awards in 2017. She received her last name Mirza through her stepfather, Late Amed Mirza. She recently started adding her actual father’s surname along with her name. She is now called Dia Mirza Handrich. Though her stepfather was a Muslim, she practices Hinduism. She was offered the role of Bruna Abdullah in the film I Hate Luv Stories, she declined the offer saying she doesn’t want to do any more cameos. Her parents got divorced when she was only 4½, soon after her mother married an Indian Muslim from Hyderabad (Ahmed Mirza).
