Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmad Anjum is a three-star general in the Pakistan Army and will be serving as the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) from November 20, 2021. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday approved the appointment of lieutenant general Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as the new director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), nearly three weeks after the military announced a major reshuffle in its top brass. Lt Gen Anjum will take over the reins of the spy agency from November 20. He was commissioned in 28th Punjab Regiment of infantry and is from 77th PMA long course. He has also served as Inspector-General of the Frontier Corps stationed in Balochistan from December 2016 to December 2018 and also served as Corp Commander of V Corps from December 2020 to October 2021. He was de-facto appointed as the DG ISI on 6 October 2021. However, his appointment was later approved by PMO on 26 October 2021. He will now succeed Faiz Hameed as DG, ISI on 20 November 2021. He was de-facto appointed by the Chief of Army Staff, following an annoucement by the DG ISPR. However, the PM’s secretariat is yet to issue a notification in order to his appointment. The Prime Minister’s Office has received three names from the COAS for the appointment of a new DG ISI, including Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum, Lt. Gen. Sarfraz and Lt. Gen. Saqib Malik are included. Later, his appointment was approved by Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on 26 October 2021. He will take charge as DG ISI on November 19, 2021.

In a major military reshuffle in Pakistan, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) appointed lieutenant general Nadeem Anjum as the new director-general of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Nadeem replaced chief Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed as the new chief. Faiz Hameed has been removed as the director-general of the Inter-Services Intelligence and he has been appointed as the Peshawar corps commander and Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum has been made new ISI chief. Anjum, who has previously served as the commander of Karachi Corps, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in September 2019. Anjum belongs to the Punjab regiment of the Pakistan army, also served as commander of the Karachi corps as well as the commandant of the Command and Staff College Quetta. Anjum led several campaigns against elements which were threatening Pakistan in the Balochistan region and is considered a ‘battle-hardened soldier’. He served as the inspector general of the Frontier Corps Balochistan. Nadeem graduated from the Royal College of Defense Studies in the UK and also holds a degree from the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Honolulu. Further, Anjum led several campaigns against elements which were threatening Pakistan in the Balochistan region and is considered a ‘battle-hardened soldier’. He served as the inspector general of the Frontier Corps Balochistan. His subordinates call him a “man with glacier brain but sharp reflexes”, news agency PTI reported. Anjum is known to be a good listener who speaks concisely. Anjum also held command postings in the eastern border of Pakistan i.e. the Line of Control. He graduated from the Royal College of Defense Studies in the UK and also holds a degree from the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Honolulu. The announcement will bring Anjum closer to becoming the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) in Pakistan, the report said, adding that the present Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s three-year extension will come to end next year. The appointment of the ISI Director-General is the prerogative of the prime minister. The spymaster’s choice is, however, made by the prime minister in consultation with the army chief, reported Dawn.
