Debut with LABOUM
LABOUM (라붐) is a girl group from South Korea formed by two companies at once, namely NH Media and Nega Network. The group originally consisted of six members namely ZN, Haein, Solbin, Yulhee, Soyeon, and Yujeong. But later, on November 3rd, 2017, Yulhee departed from the group and married FT Island’s Min-hwan. Thus, leaving the group to be a five-member one ever since. The news of LABOUM’s debut was first announced by NH Media and Nega Network who merged as the company that housed the group. It was said that LABOUM had been preparing for this debut for four years and that the group would be a sister group to NH Media’s boy group U-KISS and Nega Network’s girl group Brown Eyed Girls. The name LABOUM has the meaning of each letter, namely L (Lovely), A (Amazing), B (Beautiful), O (Only), U (Unique), and M (Marvelous). In French, LABOUM also means “party”. The group debuted with the release of a mini-album titled Petit Macaron with “Pit A Pat” as the lead track on August 28th, 2014. The writer of the song was Seo Ji-eum, who was known for writing hits songs such as f(x)’s “Electric Shock,” and TaeTiSeo’s “Twinkle,” and the composer Jung Jae-yeob was the one behind the music.
The music video was released on the same day with a cutesy beat and an equally cutesy and colorful concept. The members were dancing outdoor as they sang the lyrics of waiting for a man. The lyrics are catchy and light, with cute metaphors such as: But later turned out to be taking a heavier and bittersweet turn, The group didn’t hit mainstream success with the song. Although now, the song has been watched for 439K times, with many people revisited their debut song and saying that the group is underrated. “LABOUM is one of the groups that I don’t know why is underrated. I mean they’ve been releasing bops since their debut. Stan LABOUM Stan talent,” one commenter wrote. “I’m here after watching the Between Us MV, and their improvement and confidence is just notoriously huge :O They might not get Yulhee anymore (and that saddens me) but they still got that emotion and identity that I’ve always seen 🙂 It’s been 4 years of music and they’re still consistent and yet underrated xD,” one commenter added. “Nice rookie group, cute concept, which is a safe bet. The visual level is A. Sounds good, I like. A strange stage name but is okay. I expect good things,” said one comment. “The song that made me fall in love with LABOUM… wow – it’s just been 2 1/2 years and we have been so blessed with frequent comebacks for this most underrated group. I hope for many many years to come!” wrote another user. And, “5 years and not even a million views this is really not fair they deserve better really sad 🥺😥”
Re-debut as a UNI.T member
In 2017, ZN joined the KBS2 survival competition program called The Unit, which positioned itself as an Idol Rebooting Project. Same as the usual survival shows, contestants are eliminated in each episode if they don’t make any progress, lack talent, or get the lowest number of votes. What was unique about this show The Unit was the place for the contestants who have already debuted in a boy-group or girl-group but haven’t been very well known. The show claimed that they strived to help underrated idols to be more popular and reach their dream. Although it turned out that not all of them belonged to a girl/boy group as most of the contestants were also trainees from various agencies, looking for a place to practice. The show began with a ‘Booting’ Evaluation round which was held between September 29th and October 1st, 2017, at Kintex Hall 9 in Ilsan. In this round, the contestants were judged by the voting from the audience and the mentors. The contestant who got 90% votes from the audience was declared to have a ‘super boot’ and can be passed to the next round. The show would debut a male group and a female group from the show under the name UNI.B for a boy group and UNI.T for a girl group.
In the audition, ZN competed on the show under her real name, Bae Jinye, and performed with fellow LABOUM members Yujeong and Haein. She passed the audition into the next round.
In the final episode, out of the 92 female contestants on the show, she won a seat in the top 9 female contestants and ranked 8th overall, thus, getting to debut with the show’s project group UNI.T on May 18th, 2018. ZN debuted along with other 8 contestants such as Woohee, Jiwon, Yoonjo, NC.A, Euijin, Yebin, Hyunjoo, and Suji. The group released their mini-album Line along with the title track, “No More” on May 18th, 2018. The group met enthusiastic responses as the MV had been watched more than 3 million times. In the group, ZN filled the position as the lead vocalist and lead dancer.
The group ‘re-debuted’ on Mnet’s M! Countdown. In this album, ZN joined the group’s promotion and performances.
However, when the group released their second mini-album, Begin with the End on September 18th, 2018, with “I Mean” serving as the album’s title track, ZN was not participating in this album’s promotions due to her promotional activities in Japan with LABOUM. Sadly, that became the group’s final album since the group was disbanded on October 12th, 2018. So, those are all the things that you should know regarding LABOUM and UNI.T member ZN!
